Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in the Arab World. Nicknamed
"The City of a Thousand Minarets" for its preponderance of Islamic architecture,
Cairo has long been a center of the region's political and cultural life. Even before
Cairo was established in the tenth century, the land composing the present-day city
was the site of national capitals whose remnants remain visible in parts of Old
Cairo. Cairo is also associated with Ancient Egypt due to its proximity to the Great
Sphinx and the pyramids in nearby Giza.
But there are also ancient temples, tombs, Christian churches, magnificent Muslim
monuments, and of course, the Egyptian Antiquities Museum all either within or nearby
the city.
Cairo is an amazing city full of life and movement, and it is that way almost 24
hours every day, with the noisy honking of horns, children playing in the streets
and merchants selling their wears and services. And here, the Egyptians are most
at home in this powerful, modern and ancient city.
There are banks, foreign exchange bureaus and ATMs all over town. Banque Misr exchange
office at the Nile Hilton on the corniche is open 24 hours, as are the airport money-changing
booths. All the big hotels have ATMs.
In terms of Egypt’s history, Cairo is a relatively modern capital, founded in AD
969 by the Islamic Fatimid dynasty over the ruins of earlier Roman and Islamic settlements.
Much of the Fatimid city remains today.
Cairo provides great culture, including art galleries and music halls, such as the
Cairo Opera House, as well it should, being one of the largest cities in the world.
It also provides some of the grandest accommodations and restaurants in the world,
such as the Four Seasons and the Cairo Marriott.
